AI shopping results: how products get into the answer

Only what the vendor documents, dated October 8, 2026, then what our weekly checks see AI shopping actually read, and what a business does about it.

What the vendor documents

OpenAI is the vendor that documents shopping most plainly. Its help center says ChatGPT's product results "are selected independently by ChatGPT and are not ads, nor influenced by any OpenAI partnerships", that "ads are separate from product results", that a product appears when ChatGPT judges it relevant to the buyer's intent using the query and context such as memory, that merchants on Shopify "are already connected through Shopify Catalog" while other merchants "can apply for direct feed access", and that merchants listed for a product are ordered by "availability, price, quality, and whether they make or primarily sell the item".

Google says its AI features need nothing beyond ordinary Search eligibility and uses a query fan-out to assemble a response; Perplexity describes answers built from "authoritative sources" with numbered citations; neither documents a separate product-card mechanism in the pages we read. Where a vendor's statement is not quoted here, we have not seen one.

What it means for your pages

A product answer has two layers and they come from different places. The text names brands and products and is written from roundups, retailer pages and brands' own sites, the way every other answer is. The product cards beside it come from catalog feeds and retailer listings, and in our checks they are labelled as such in the links (a Shopify catalog parameter on a brand's own card, a retailer's domain on another). A store can be named in the text and absent from the cards, or the reverse, and the fix for each layer is different: pages and listings for the text, the feed and the product data for the cards.

From our checks

What we have seen AI shopping do.

Rows from scans and checks run in September and October 2026, with the companies unnamed where they have not agreed to be named.

CategoryWhat happened
WalletsAsked for the best slim leather wallets, ChatGPT named eight products from five brands with prices and showed a shopping carousel that sold them through two retailers and a brand's own store; the client, a Shopify store with 32,000 reviews, was in neither the text nor the cards.
MagSafe walletsAsked for the best MagSafe leather wallet, ChatGPT built the answer from a magazine's guide and a design blog and showed cards from a retailer, a department store and two brands' own stores. Gemini, asked the same question, searched for the client by name and named its product fourth.
Full-grain brandsAsked which brands' leather develops a patina, ChatGPT's cards carried two brands' own Shopify catalog entries and two products sold through a department store; the client's Shopify catalog appeared in none of the scan's carousels.
SupplementsAsked for the best hair serums, ChatGPT's answer carried product cards from two beauty retailers and the brands' own Shopify catalogs; the client sold through two other retailers and not those, and appeared in neither the text nor the cards.
What we do

The work, for AI shopping.

For a store, the weekly check archives the product cards as well as the text, so the dashboard shows both layers. Month one starts with the feed: whether the catalog is in the feeds the cards are built from and whether price, availability and maker are right on the product pages. Then the text layer: the comparison and category pages the roundups are writing for your rivals, the facts page the brand answer keeps asking for (where it is made, the warranty), and the inclusion requests to the buying guides the answers read.

Questions

Asked straight.

Can we buy placement in ChatGPT's product cards?

OpenAI says product results "are not ads, nor influenced by any OpenAI partnerships" and that ads are separate from product results. What a merchant controls is whether its catalog reaches the feed and whether the product data is right.

We sell on Shopify. Are we in the feed automatically?

OpenAI says Shopify merchants "are already connected through Shopify Catalog"; whether a given store's catalog is syndicated is a setting in the store's own admin, and it is the first thing we ask you to check. Other merchants apply for direct feed access.

Our product was named in the text but not in the cards. Why?

Because the two layers come from different sources: the text from the pages the assistant read, the cards from catalog feeds and retailer listings. Being named is the pages' work; being carded is the feed's.
